Thomas Beilby 1947/1826
"Was the youngest son of his parents? Little is on record concerning his early days, but we know that he was taught painting by his brother William, and later on taught drawing himself. At first he seems to have helped his brother and sister with their decorative work, and later on devoted himself more to the engraving side of the family’s activities on conjunction with Ralph, and what records there are suggest that he concerned himself more with the organization and commercial side of the business, which took him to Sheffield soon after his mother’s death in 1778, where in 1780 he married Isabella Fell, third daughter of Richard and Agnes Fell, Richard Fell was born in 1720 and was for some time Mayor of Kendal; His portrait is in the writer’s custody.
Thomas and Isabella had ten children (see chart), of which the first three were born in Sheffield. An extract from a diary, or journal, kept by him and dated March 1783 makes it clear that at that time he was making arrangements to move to Birmingham “to act as agent for the Company” there. The actual move must have taken place in 1785, and the remaining seven children were born there.
The “Company” referred to is almost certain a development of the activities which originated in Gateshead, but probably more on the metal engraving side than on that of glass painting. Bewick tells us that towards the end of his partnership with Ralph the latter had enlarged his interests to include watch and clock making, in which Thomas no doubt participated.
A letter written in Birmingham in 1823 by Thomas to his grandson (George 1822/1895) in Edinburgh, makes it clear that he spent the remainder of his life in Birmingham, where he died in 1826, at the age of 79, having long outlived his brothers and sisters.
The writer has silhouette portraits of Thomas and Isabella, and locks of their hair. Thomas’ taken after death, but Isabella’s given by her to her eldest son during her lifetime; it is raven black and of silky texture.
Their eldest son was named Thomas (1781/1860). He spent all his life in Birmingham, and appears to have carried on the parental business there. We have an excellent photograph of him taken by Whitlocks of Birmingham, where he was between sixty and seventy years of age. He married Deborah Proctor in 1811, and had one daughter Mary Anne, who married Thomas Avery a founder of the firm of Avery and Co. Thomas Beilby was responsible for the collection and docketing of many of the old papers and records of the Beilbys, which were in due course passed on to his eldest nephew George 1811.1895, through whose son, also George 1950/1924, they came to the writer."
