Descendants of Richard Beilby

Sixth Generation

71. William Turton Beilby (Charles Henry , William Turton , William , William , Richard ) was born on 7 Jul 1865.

William at around the age of 17 made his way to Canada and settled in Manitoba.

William married Jessie Munroe on 20 Mar 1885. Jessie was born in May 1861.

They had the following children:

+ 97 M i Arthur Beilby was born on 2 Dec 1885.
+ 98 F ii Edith Gwendolyn Beilby was born on 9 Feb 1889.

72. Laura Caroline Beilby (Charles Henry , William Turton , William , William , Richard ) was born in May 1868. She died on 5 Jul 1897. She was buried in Millitary Cemetery, Pietermritzurg, Natal, Sth Africa.

Laura died 1 month after giving birth to their only child, Audrey.

Laura married Lieutenant Colonel N Noel.

Of the Royal Engineers.

Lieutenant Colonel N Noel and Laura had the following children:

99 F i Auderey Beilby Noel Noel was born on 17 Jun 1897.

Audrey was sent back to England with a nanny to be raised.
        Auderey married Grafton.

75. Christopher A Beilby [scrapbook] (George , William , Thomas , William , Richard ) was born in 1845. He died on 10 Aug 1908. Christopher emigrated on 20 Sep 1876 from London England.

Christopher Beilby immigrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1876 from England where he married Charlotte Honora Snell. The origins of Charlotte are still unknown to the writer.

Christopher was a preacher and he practiced his trade not only in England and on board ship on his journey to Australia, but it is documented that he preached within Victoria, Australia and later for a time at least in New Zealand. It has been mentioned that Christopher immigrated to Australia to meet an Uncle who was living in Australia, this may have been John Wood Beilby (see the notes son George Howard Beilby 1887-? And William Beilby MD 1783-1849).

It is known that Christopher lived and preached at the Ramahuck Aboriginal mission for at least 4 years. The Ramahyuck mission was set up under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria in about 1863. It was situated on the edge of Lake Wellington in Gippsland Australia and set up by Rev Haganuer who had previously been at Ebenezer Mission.

The writer has in his possession a sermon he wrote in Ramahybuck in 1884.

The only story told by Christopher of his experiences in Australia was recited to the writer by George Tomas Beilby (1915) on the 29th October 2001 as follows;

"Returning home one evening after dark he felt something grab him by the shoulder that stopped him dead in his tracks. To see what was happening he struck a match, there in front of him was a snake. One more step and he would have been on top of it. Was it the hand of God that had stopped him in his tracks?"

Christopher and Charlotte had 5 children in Australia, Charles (born in Kew, Melbourne), Thomas (Australia), Dora and Horace (Ramahybuck, Gypsland, Victoria) before moving to New Zealand around 1886. They Traveled to New Zealand via Bluff where they disembarked. This was reportedly due to sickness on board the boat and Bluff was the first landfall.

Their fifth child, George Howard Beilby was born in Darfield where Charles taught for a couple of years.

Christopher then moved to Westport where he purchased the farm know as "Blink Bonnieā€ late 1800's (The name Blink Bonnie has a meaning related with the early morning light). Christopher died in 1909 but the farm remained in Beilby hands until it was sold to Treyton Potter who purchased the farm for his family some time during WW1.

It is thought that after the sale of "Blink Bonnie" that Charlotte and her children moved to Wakefield onto the farm owned by her eldest son, Thomas Godchild Beilby at 88 Valley. The writer comes to this conclusion from two sources.

1. On Julius Alexander's military records, the address of the next of kin, Charlotte Beilby changed from "Upper Matakitaki, Westport" to "Wakefield, Nelson". This was done, "by authority of Thomas Beilby".

2. Speaking to George Thomas Beilby (1915), George recalls staying at this farm owned by Thomas awaiting the return of his farther, George Howard Beilby (1887- ) from the war. Julius (1893-1951) was working this farm at the time (after his return). So there was quite a collection of Beilby's at this farm at this time.

Christopher married Charlotte Honora Snell [scrapbook] on 10 Jan 1876. Charlotte was born in 1852. She died on 23 Nov 1929.

They had the following children:

100 M i Thomas Godchild Beilby was born on 17 Oct 1877 in Kew Melbourne Australia. He died in Jul 1919. He was buried in Mt Heslington Nelson New Zealand.

Little is know of Thomas. Recently the writer has been told that he owned the farm in 88 Valey, Murchison, New Zealand which his brother, Julius Alexander Beilby worked around the time of World War 1.

As far as is known Thomas did not marry and he died at the age of 42 in 1919 Just a month after Julius was discharged from the army after WW1.

From the information available it is not unreasonalbe to think that the Thomas Beilby's mother, Charlotte and her remaining children all moved to this farm sometime during WW1 after the sale of Blink Bonnie. See the notes for Christopher A Beilby (1845-1908) for details.
101 M ii Charles Spergeon Beilby was born on 2 Apr 1879 in Australia. He died on 10 Feb 1932 in Westport New Zealand.

At this stage little is know about Charles.

It is known that he worked in the coal mines in Westport, and that Charles and Florence did not have any children.

minning engineer and died of a heart attach
Charles married Florence Pauline Randerson on 21 Jun 1911 in Murchison New Zealand .
+ 102 M iii Horace Watson Beilby was born on 24 Jun 1881. He died on 20 Aug 1957.
103 F iv Rachel Nora Beilby [scrapbook] was born on 12 Apr 1883 in Gypsland Australia. She died on 7 Jan 1959 in Richmond Nelson New Zealand.

Rachel was named after here grandmother "Rachel Mary Beilby" nee Watson) did not marry, she is remembered by some as "a stern old nurse". She worked in the Richmond and Nelson area and for a time looked after the boys of Dr Curry in Richmond.
104 F v Dora Mary Beilby [scrapbook] was born on 19 Dec 1885 in Gypsland Australia. She died in 1969.

Dora and Henry had no children.
Dora married Rev Henry Havelock Barton on 10 Apr 1907 in Westport New Zealand.
+ 105 M vi George Howord Beilby was born on 2 Nov 1887.
+ 106 F vii Nellie Agnes Eliza Beilby was born on 6 May 1890. She died in 1929.
+ 107 M viii Julius Alexander Beilby was born on 11 Feb 1893. He died on 14 Nov 1951.

77. Sir George Beilby [scrapbook] (George , William , Thomas , William , Richard ) was born on 17 Nov 1850 in Edinburgh Scotland. He died on 1 Aug 1924 in Hampstead London England.

Sir George Beilby, SCI World President in 1899 and earlier one of the pioneers of SCI activity in Scotland. Sir George later served as President of the UK's Royal Society of Chemistry and Institute of Materials, who share in the selection procedures

British industrial chemist who developed the process of manufacturing potassium cyanide by passing ammonia over a heated mixture of charcoal and potassium carbonate. This process helped meet the increased demand for cyanide for use in extracting gold from low-grade ores.

An extract from http://www.bookrags.com/books/rrhin/PART8.htm: Scientific Advisory Committee;--Commercial Advisory Committee.--Even at this stage activities were growing and government organisation was found necessary to cover such functions as in Germany were rendered unnecessary by the existence of the I.G. It became clear that the new department would require strong permanent scientific advice, and this was found in the formation of the Scientific Advisory Committee. This included the most active members of the former relevant Royal Society Committee, amongst whom were Professor A. W. Crossley, the Secretary, and Professors H. B. Baker, J. F. Thorpe, and Sir George Beilby, all of whom rendered great services in the later development of this new branch of warfare.

Sir married Emma Newham in 1877. Emma was born in 1850. She died in 1926.

They had the following children:

+ 108 M i Hubert Noel Beilby.
109 F ii Mrs Winifred Beilby was born about 1880. She died in 1937.
Winifred married Professor Frederick Soddy [scrapbook] in 1908. Frederick was born on 2 Sep 1877 in Eastborne Sussex England. He died on 22 Sep 1956 in Brighton England.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1921

"for his contributions to our knowledge of the chemistry of radioactive substances, and his investigations into the origin and nature of isotopes"

Frederick Soddy, the son of Benjamin Soddy, a London merchant, was born at Eastbourne, Sussex, England, on September 2, 1877. He was educated at Eastbourne College and the University College of Wales , Aberystwyth. In 1895 he obtained a scholarship at Merton College, Oxford, from which University he graduated in 1898 with first class honours in chemistry. After two years of research at Oxford he went to Canada and from 1900 to 1902 was Demonstrator in the Chemistry Department of McGill University , Montreal. Here he worked with Professor Sir Ernest Rutherford on problems of radioactivity. Together they published a series of papers on radioactivity and concluded that it was a phenomenon involving atomic disintegration with the formation of new kinds of matter. They also investigated the gaseous emanation of radium. Leaving Canada, Soddy then worked with Sir William Ramsay at University College, London where he continued the study of radium emanation. Here, Soddy and Ramsay were able to demonstrate, by spectroscopic means, that the element helium was produced in the radioactive decay of a sample of radium bromide and that helium was evolved in the decay of emanation. From 1904 to 1914 Soddy was lecturer in physical chemistry and radioactivity in the University of Glasgow . Here he did much practical chemical work on radioactive materials. During this period he evolved the so-called "Displacement Law", namely that emission of an alpha-particle from an element causes that element to move back two places in the Periodic Table. His peak was reached in 1913 with his formulation of the concept of isotopes, which stated that certain elements exist in two or more forms which have different atomic weights but which are indistinguishable chemically. In 1914 he was appointed Professor of Chemistry at the University of Aberdeen , but plans for research were hampered by the war. In 1919 he became Dr. Lees Professor of Chemistry at Oxford University, a post he held until 1937 when he retired, on the death of his wife. After his period at Glasgow he did no further work in radioactivity and allowed the later developments to pass him by. His interest was diverted to economic, social and political theories which gained no general acceptance, and to unusual mathematical and mechanical problems.
His books include Radioactivity (1904), The Interpretation of Radium (1909), The Chemistry of the Radioactive Elements (1912-1914), Matter and Energy (1912), Science and Life (1920), The Interpretation of the Atom (1932), The Story of Atomic Energy (1949), and Atomic Transmutation (1953). Soddy was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1910 and Oxford awarded him an honorary degree. He was awarded the Albert Medal in 1951. He was a man of strong principles and obstinate views, friendly with students and prickly with colleagues. ln 1908, he married Winifred Beilby. He died on September 22, 1956 at Brighton.
