Originally George Howard Beilby was employed as a school teacher in Owaka in the Cotlins District. He then moved to Dunedin where he taught in the Green Island community. While he was teaching here he was draughted for the First World war. He was still in training in trentham when the war finished .
Upon leaving the army George Howard Beilby traveled to Murchison where his son, George Thomas Beilby was staying with his two brothers Julius Alexander and Thomas Godchild Beilby before moved to Highcliff to teach.
From there to Seddinsville, ( 30 miles north of Westport), Finally he moved to Nelson where he was employed as the first assistant to the Central School in Nelson.
From here George and his family moved to Hastings before retiring.
George had in his possession a marble clock that used to sit on the mantlepiece of his home in Seddinsville. This clock is reported as being a family hearloom once belonging to John Wood Beilby (1818-). This may have been the unlce that Gristopher Beilby came to Australia looking for. At least it hints that the 2 of them meet in Australia at some time.

106. Nellie Agnes Eliza Beilby [scrapbook] (Christopher A , George , William , Thomas , William , Richard ) was born on 6 May 1890 in Westport New Zealand. She died in 1929 in Maruia New Zealand .
Undoubtedly the most tragic story of this generation of Beilby’s is the story of Nellie Beilby. Nellie was born in Westport and moved to Wakefield with her mother and brothers and sisters.
It was in Wakefield that she met David Warwick Thomson. The Thomson family lived in the Maruia where his parents had a boarding house. (This house was destroyed in a fire in 1932 and all possessions lost).
Nellie at the age of 20 married David Warwick Thomson. Warwick (David) along with his 3 brothers was allotted land in the Maruia after returning from service in World War 1. The house he built there was from the timber he cleared from the land.
Nellie and Warwick had 2 children, Dorothy and Verna. Sadly as a result of the 1929 Murchison earthquake the region was cut off from the outside world for a time. Nellie being a diabetic could not get any supplies of insulin and as a result she died.
In a publication called “Early Days in the Maruia and War Reminiscences” written by Warwick Thomson 1888-1980 and published by the Murchison District Historical and Museum Society Inc, you may read of some of the Beilby and Thompson history of the region. This publication is available only at the Murchison museum to my knowledge.

They had the following children:
+ 153 F i Dorathy Thomson was born on 24 Jun 1921. + 154 F ii Verna Winifred Thomson was born on 26 Feb 1924.
107. Julius Alexander Beilby [scrapbook] (Christopher A , George , William , Thomas , William , Richard ) was born on 11 Feb 1893 in Westport New Zealand. He died on 14 Nov 1951 in Mapua New Zealand. He was buried in Rsa Wakapuaka Nelson New Zealand.
Julius was born in Westport New Zealand.
He served in the New Zealand army during WW1 enlisting on the 17-April-1915.
The following details have been obtained from his service records.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Julius's initial posting was as a gunner of the West Coast Artillery regiment. During his service of 4 years and 54 days, he spent 3 years and 215 days posted overseas. Initially he served in Egypt during 1915-16 and then France from 1916-18. During this period he was promoted to Corporal on the 26-August-1918. Directly after the war Julius was stationed in Germany before returning to New Zealand on the 12-May-1919. He was finally discharged on the 9-June-1919.He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------When Julius was on leave in Europe he traveled to England where made, and kept contact with Sir George Beilby (His Uncle). It may have been through this contact that the genealogical study of Hubert Noel Beilby (Son of Sir George) finally made it's way to New Zealand in around 1952.
Upon returning to New Zealand after the war to he moved to his oldest brother’s farm at 88 Valley, Wakefeild where his mother and the rest of the Beilby's were living. The oldest brother Thomas Godchild Beilby never married and died at the age 42 in July 1919. Julius moved to another farm in 88 Valley Rd owned at the time by the "Hunts". When we are not sure probably about the time he married.
Julius married Ellen Florence Fairhall on the 24th August 1923 and they had 5 children. Frederick, Charlotte and Ellen were all born in Wakefield at 88 Valley rd before moving onto the Muruia.
In 1928 the Beilby family of Julius and Ellen moved to the Maruia where Julius had purchased a farm at "Frog Flat” which he named "Heatherleigh" with his returned serviceman grant. This farm he had to clear, as it was all bush when he and his family arrived, burning the timbered country up in the hills behind the "flat".
(The name ‘Frog Flat” was still on old milk can delivery box right out the front of the farm in Dec 2000.)
The only means of transport available at that time was the horse and cart. A trip into the Maruia would not have been an easy journey. People still talk of crossing the saddle in a car today as a journey in it's own right and when you visit this area today you still have a sense of isolation in this region. In winter when the snows came, one can only imagine what it must have been like. My farther Frederick Thomas Beilby (the oldest son of Julius) talked fondly of these times.
Schooling in those times in a remote area also took on a different dimension. No accommodation was available for the local schoolteacher, so local families shared boarding the teacher, taking him or her in a term at a time each. This was shared between the Beilby, Lester, and Thompson families. The boarding was shared so as to distribute the cost of maintaining the teacher, as money was scarce.
In 1929 Sir George Beilby willed Julius some monies. With this he purchased the family's first automobile, a "Hupmobile”. As with just about everything else of the time and region where self-reliance would have been a necessity, Julius taught himself to drive. To get a license in those days you had to get to Murchison. On the day that Julius presented himself for his driving test he was asked how he got there and replied "I drove over the Maruia Saddle", to which the reply was, "Well you won't have any trouble passing then will you".
Sadly the farm, "Heatherleigh" at Frog Flat like so many other farms at the time this was not successful and ran into problem's in the great depression. The family moved on to around Springs Junction (West Bank, Station Creek) share milking on a farm owned by Kohen (Ralph) Gibbs. Here the Hupmobile was sold and a vehicle called a "Rugby", was purchased.
From here he moved to East Takaka in 1939. Where he leased a farm from the Bagents for a time. The 4 oldest children still remember and talk fondly of loading up the old "Rugby" and the trip from Springs Junction to Takaka all the children holding the hood down.
He retired in Mapua but was only there for a few months before he died.
For additional information see the Murchison Museum in New Zealand for Beilby family details where records of their residency in the area is recorded along with other families of the region.
